We know that lead in drinking water is dangerous. In 1986, Congress restricted the amount of lead allowed in construction and plumbing materials. Although this issue may not be limited to homes constructed before 1986, homes that were built before 1986, are more likely to have plumbing components that could possibly contain elevated levels of lead, such as pipes, solder, and fixtures.
Based on the guidance and requirements from 40 CFR § 141.84(a), which is part of the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revision, as well as section NR 809.119, Wis. Adm. Code, we have created a program to gather a detailed inventory of all municipal water service line materials and premise plumbing materials as required by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Lead Service Line (LSL) program.
Every three (3) years the Town is required to test twenty (20), Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pre-approved residential sites for Lead and Copper to comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper rules. The testing sites are typically in areas where homes were built prior to 1986 because some construction materials made prior to 1986 potentially contained elevated lead levels. Here in the Town of Lawrence, there is only one Copper service in the municipality with the rest being all Poly services. There are a total of just over twenty (20+) sites in the town that meet the guidelines to be sample locations per the Department of natural Resources requirements. Making most of the Town free from the required Lead and Copper testing.
